Within the region there are over a dozen castles which can be visited within a couple hours drive of La Ganne Gites below are a selection of some of our favourites.

Château de Duras

Chateau De DurasThe local Château de Duras is only 4 kilometers from La Ganne. You will be able to discover the rich history of the Dukes of Duras and the various battles, sieges and conquests of the castle over the centuries.

The castle itself has an extensive maze of over 30 rooms where you can discover the architectural splendors and hidden passageways before touring the XVIIIth Century country mansion.

Château d’Eymet

chateau d'eymetChâteau d’Eymet is a small castle in the bastide town of Eymet. While visiting this local town it is well worth a visit to gaze at this ancient building before returning to the local market and restaurants.

The castle was built in the thirteenth century, before the creation of the country house in the grounds. The house was rebuilt in the nineteenth century and since 1963 part of the house has been rebuilt into a museum.

Since 1994 the buildings of the castle and part of the western boundary wall are registered as historical monuments.

Château de Bridoire

This castle is located in the Dordogne region of France. You can explore 15 rooms furnished over 3 levels including the King’s room and the Chapel. During the summer there are 100’s of old games for visitors to enjoy including trying on armour, using crossbows and even looking into the 19th Century stables.

Château de Monbazillac

Monbazillac

Since 2008 this Château has undergone the renovation of certain rooms which has provided a permanent setting for exhibiting artists works thanks to a partnership with “Les Rives de l’Art” Association.

The castle itself has stood since the end of the 16th Century battling through a number of peasant revolts and religious wars.

Tours are available whether independent or guided with the guided tours available in French, English and Russian.

Château de Biron

Biron

The castle itself contains a twelfth century keep and sixteenth century living quarters and chapel. The commune purchased Biron in 1978 and has since been restoring the building.

This ancient fortress has undergone several architectural modifications during its history. Perched on a hill on the borders of Périgord and Agenais, it commands a wide view over fields, farmhouses and neighbouring forests. It was at the heart of a great seigniorial exploitation.

Château de Castelnaud

CastelnaudBuilt overlooking the surrounding Dordogne valley on the top of a hillside in the heart of Perigord Noir this is a wonderful example of a 12th century castle.

This medieval fortress has an extensive collection of weapons and armour including powerful siege machines along the bastion.
